  • A Sub-Divisional Engineer (CLASS I officer) holds the rank of an Assistant Engineer (AE).
  • SDE is the incharge of the sub-divisions of a state. The whole area under an engineering department works under the Chief Engineer (CE). This area is divided into a number of circles or regions which are the administrative units of the department. Each circle is headed by the Superintending Engineer (SE) who is the administrative and professional head of the circle. Each circle is divided into a number of divisions which are the executive units of the department. Each such division is under an Executive Engineer (EE) who is responsible for the execution and management of all work in the division. Each division is further subdivided into a number of sub-divisions each under charge of SDE.
  • SDE has to execute, supervise and manage the works falling under their charge and have to maintain the quality and progress of works.
  • Usually each district is under a SDE designated as District Engineer.

Who is JE?

  • A Junior Engineer (JE) holds the rank of an Overseer (or Section Officer).

  • JE has work supervisors (or work inspectors) under them to assist them.

State Engineering Examinations

  • State commissions in the states are responsible for the recruitment of SDE and JE in various engineering departments of the state government.
